Executive Mayor, Councillor Geoffrey Makhubo, has assured residents that the City’s finances are in safe hands.Delivering his first State of the City address on Tuesday, 4 May 2021, and the last of the current term of office, the Executive Mayor says not only are Joburg’s finances stable, but they are also buoyant.
Councillor Makhubo revealed that Joburg was able to perform considerably well against adjusted Covid-related revenue collection estimates, even allowing the City to cap off the 2019/2020 financial year with a surplus of almost R4 billion.
Despite the potentially massive disruption to the City’s financial and economic well-being, brought about by the Coronavirus, the City was able to collect 6% more in revenue compared to the 2018/2019 financial year.
